I am asking SAG-AFTRA members to support my request to remain on the National Board of our union. There is much to be done. My strong support from members Of all three divisions of the national board an it's leadership, strong support from within our branch in my petition drive, and five members of your elected council. The reason is simple. I do the work of the membership for our Nevada Local.

I fought for us to have a strong local boots on the ground executive and continue to push for a brick and mortar office.

Previous executives know the work I do and why I continue to be a strong and effective voice for Nevada.

With the cut of over 80 positions coast to coast, 13 locals lost their executives. I join with those others in fighting for the full restoration of local executives and local offices, and am shoulder to shoulder with the locals in insisting on the full measure of service we came to expect from the two unions we merged last year. Through strength, unity and the networking and friendships I have built, I am in the best postion to fight for full service for Nevada.

I fought for and gained expansion of the Nevada's background zone as well as gains in background numbers and pay. Those who served on the national background committed know how strongly I fight for Nevada and all those who work background. We came close to a statewide and national expansion of background zones.

I have always championed open, timely and accurate communication with the membership. While legal restrictions still apply, great progress is being made in opening the door to all possible methods of listening to the membership and keeping all of us informed.

As past chair of the Nevada Legislative Committee and an active participant in national legislative initiatives I have been a strong part of pushing Nevada closer to being a film production friendly state.

I believe in young talent, and have served along side Nevada SAG officer Kim Renee on the National Young Performers Committee, where I worked hard to launch the Young Performers informational web site and provide support services to parents and the performers themselves.

I fought for and worked as co-chair on committees to simplify contracts and get them on the web in easier to use and interactive ways. The result is already increased ultra-low and low budget production, and will expand into other contracts. This means work and the opportunity for current demo reels.

I am past chair of Communications and serve as the co-chair of the New Technologies committee, keeping on top of how Nevada can benefit from the future of our industry.

I am working on the active organizing of Spanish language production, web production and many other key areas for the membership of the Screen Actors Guild. I have been active in equal opportunity and alternative casting initiatives. I fight against age discrimination as part of several national task forces.

The fact is that I am listened to, know how to work with, and am very effective as a part of the National Board, and Nevada's voice on the board.

References and results speak volumes.

Feel free to contact my references, those who have endorsed me and my fellow national board members to find out for yourself how well I represent Nevada, and the imporatance of my remaining on the SAG National Board of Directors.

SAG-AFTRA is not a club. We are a union and the job you have elected me to involves fighting for strong contracts, overseeing an agressive staff, watching the budget bottom line and representing the best interest of members in a rapidly changing world.

At this critical time, with the possible creation of a new union, great increases in organizing and the need for strong support from board members and staff, it is important you choose to keep experience on the National Board.

Thank you for the consideration of your vote.

FALCON
There is a scene in the John Huston classic "The Maltese Falcon" in which Sydney Greenstreet's character Gutman has to choose between his right-hand man Wilmer or toss him to the cops so he can continue on with his quest for the priceless falcon statute.
Gutman mulls it over for a few seconds and then turns to Wilmer and tells him, "I am sorry indeed to lose you and I want you to know that I couldn't be fonder of you if you were my own son. But, well, by gad, if you lose a son, it's possible to get another and there's only one Maltese Falcon."

Art is a hard working member who works with one interest only, the members of his Branch. It is the members who drive Art to be dedicated to improving their lives and working conditions. - Helen E. McNutt, Philadelphia Local Branch, National Board

Being very Irish, I find myself referring to the recent past of Screen Actors Guild as “The Troubles” - A time of unprecedented turmoil punctuated by screaming matches, intimidation, lawsuits, and, yes, even threats of physical violence. (And that was just the social hour!).

Make no mistake, the SAG-AFTRA National Boardroom was no place for the faint of heart. Some threw up their hands in exasperation and simply walked away from elected service. Others - particularly those from the Regional Branch Division - recognized that SAG-AFTRA's continued existence as a truly national union was at stake.

One such individual is Art Lynch, who fought those battles on behalf of the members of SAG and AFTRA Nevada. While we are now enjoying a well-deserved peace in our Boardroom, the work is far from done and there are surely more battles ahead.
Art has proved himself an effective advocate for Nevada time and again. He very much deserves your continued support. -Todd Hissong SAG-AFTRA Chicago National Board Director Vice Chair Regional Branch Division Screen Actors Guild

Art Lynch is a knowledgeable and experienced representative for Nevada on the National Board. His is also a passionate and articulate voice on members' behalf. At this vitally important time in our union's development, it is crucial to retain experienced voices in the National Board. Return Art Lynch to office. -Betsy Beard, Arizona Vice President

Art Lynch's years of service have allowed him to gain the respect of members across the country. He has the ability to understand the greater good, while making sure that even the least of us have our voices heard. Art is a passionate, articulate leader who has worked tirelessly on behalf of Nevada members. He has been fearless during difficult political times and always stands up for what he believes is in the best interest of the members.  -Suzanne Burkhead, Dallas-Fort Worth

"SAG-AFTRA national board members

were looking to Art as a leader."

 - Scott Rogers, Hawaii

To the SAG-AFTRA Nevada Members:

I have been a SAG, AFTRA, and Equity member for over 34 years.

My first year on the national board I was very impressed with your national director, Art Lynch.

I noticed right away that other SAG national board members were looking to Art as a leader.

He is someone they had faith in.  His opinion matters  He always votes for what he believed was in the best interest of his Nevada branch, even when others tried to persuade him a different way.  He is a leader in the merger effort that is now under way and I sincerely hope you vote to return him to the national board to continue to lead us toward this crucial moment in SAG-AFTRA history.

I'm sure you know the old adage; "Don't change horses midstream".

This has never been truer than it is now.

Art is a leader and we need him to help us at this historical time.

Please support Art Lynch for the SAG national board of directors.

Understanding the Core of Stories and Character Archtypes

$

(click here for access to Scott's blog...)

A Word About Archetypes (How To Book More Acting Jobs!)

Know your archetypes. There are two authors that every actor should read that few actors have read. I know (or at least I hope) that many of you have read Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, Sandy Meisner, Sonia Moore, Stella Adler, and Lee Strasberg. So perhaps now you assume that you know all about acting. But if you haven’t read Christopher Vogler’s “The Writer’s Journey,” and Joseph Campbell’s “The Power of Myth,” then you’re missing more than you know.  These books deal with archetypes. When I say “archetypes,” I mean the “types of characters” on which all characters are based.

Joseph Campbell taught us first, back in 1949, in “The Hero with a Thousand Faces,” that virtually all myths (and stories) worldwide share a similar structure. The other two books take this information and apply it to modern-day storytelling – Vogler, specifically to filmmaking. For example, all stories have, in some way, a hero that goes on a journey and returns with an elixir. On this journey, the hero meets mentors, villains, gatekeepers, shape-shifters, etc. Vogler uses well-known movies such as Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz as examples but you can use literally any movie and the paradigm still holds.

By understanding who these characters are and how a story is structured, you the actor, go into the audition knowing what your role is in the story, and therefore, knowing what they’re looking for. This knowledge comes into play ALL THE TIME. At the audition an actor never has enough information about a character or a story because you seldom get the whole script. Understanding who your character is, in the scheme of things, will help you to make better acting choices. Otherwise, like all the other actors auditioning, you’re just guessing as to what it is that they’re looking for—how the character feels about the people he is talking to. Read the books, learn the archetypes, and it will get you jobs…

Union talent floats all boats! Audition for the fun of auditioning!

Audition for all work, take only Union contracted work

Union Actors may audition for non-union work, however you may not work without a union contract. One way to assure professional projects is to help the producer to use union talent. This can be achieved by doing a great audition and then contacting SAG-AFTRA.

With the union comes protections for your income, working conditions, safety and if there is money, contributions to pension and health.

So,audition for non-union as well as union work, but all professional performers should put a value on you time and talents that dictates to take the job only if there is a union contract.

SAG and AFTRA actors must follow Rule One, and not work a project unless there is a union contract.

There are many contracts and aspects to contracts that allow a producer to step up to professional union performers.

It is to their advantage!

And the only way to raise the water to float all boats in our market.

10 SELF-CARE TECHNIQUES TO HELP MANAGE STRESS

$
0
0

EXERCISE. Physical activity has always provided relief from stress. In the past, daily work was largely physical. Now that physical exertion is no longer a requirement for earning a living, we don't get rid of stress so easily. It accumulates very quickly. We need to develop a regular exercise program to reduce the effects of stress before it becomes distress. Try aerobics, walking, jogging, dancing, or swimming.

GET ORGANIZED. Develop a realistic schedule of daily activities that includes time for work, sleep, relationships, and recreation. Use a daily "thing to do " list. Improve your physical surroundings by cleaning your house and straightening up your office. Use your time and energy efficiently.

REDUCE TIME URGENCY. If you frequently check your watch or worry about what you do with your time, learn to take things a bit slower. Allow plenty of time to get things done. Plan your schedule ahead of time. Recognize that you can only do so much in a given period. Practice the notion of "pace, not race".

QUIET TIME. Balance your family, social, and work demands with special private times. Hobbies are good antidotes for daily pressures. Unwind by taking a quiet stroll, soaking in a hot bath, watching a sunset, or listening to calming music.

TALK TO FRIENDS. Friends can be good medicine. Daily doses of conversation, regular social engagements, and occasional sharing of deep feelings and thoughts can reduce stress quite nicely.

WATCH YOUR HABITS. Eat sensibly -- a balanced diet will provide all the necessary energy you will need during the day. Avoid nonprescription drugs and avoid alcohol use -- you need to be mentally and physically alert to deal with stress. Be mindful of the effects of excessive caffeine and sugar on nervousness. Other substances such as nicotine in cigarettes restrict blood circulation and affect the stress response.

PRACTICE ACCEPTANCE. Many people get distressed over things they won't let themselves accept. Often, these are things that can't be changed, for example someone else's feelings or beliefs. If something unjust bothers you, that is different. If you act in a responsible way, the chances are you will manage that stress effectively.

TALK  RATIONALLY TO YOURSELF. Ask yourself what real impact the stressful situation will have on you in a day or in a week, and see if you can let the negative thoughts go. Think through whether the situation is your problem or the other person's. If it is yours, approach it calmly and firmly. If it is the other person's, there is not much you can do about it. Rather than condemning yourself with hindsight thinking like, "I should have...," think about what you can learn from the error and plan for the future. Watch out for perfectionism -- set realistic and attainable goals. Remember: everyone makes errors. Be careful of procrastination -- practice breaking tasks into smaller units to make it manageable, and practice prioritizing to get things done.

TO RELAX. Throughout the day, take "mini-breaks". Sit down and get comfortable. Slowly take in a deep breath; hold it; and then exhale very slowly. At the same time, let your shoulder muscles droop, smile, and say something positive like, "I am r-e-l-a-x-e-d." Be sure to get sufficient rest at night.

DISARM YOURSELF. Every situation in life does not require you to be competitive. Adjust your approach to an event according to its demands. You don't have to raise your voice in a simple discussion. Playing tennis with a friend does not have to be an Olympic trial. Leave behind you your "weapons" of shouting, having the last word, putting someone else down, and blaming.

ABOUT STRESS--

Many people don't realize it, but stress is a very natural and important part of life. Without stress there would be no life at all! We need stress (eustress), but not too much stress for too long(distress). Eustress helps keep us alert, motivates us to face challenges, and drives us to solve problems.

These low levels of stress are manageable and can be thought of as necessary and normal stimulation.

Distress, on the other hand, results when our bodies over-react to events. It leads to what has been called a "fight or flight" reaction. Such reactions may have been useful in times long ago when our ancestors were frequently faced with life or death matters. Nowadays, such occurrences are not usual. Yet, we react to many daily situations as if they were life or death matters. Our bodies don't really know the difference between a saber-tooth tiger attacking and an employer correcting our work. Howwe perceive and interpret the events of life dictates how our bodies react. If we think something is very scary or worrisome, our bodies react accordingly.

When we view something as manageable, though, our body doesn't go haywire; it remains alert but not alarmed. The activation of our sympathetic nervous system (a very important part of our general nervous system) mobilizes us for quick action. The more we sense danger (social or physical), the more our body reacts. Have you ever been unexpectedly called upon to give an "off-the-cuff" talk and found that your heart pounded so loudly and your mouth was so dry that you thought you just couldn't do it?

That's over-reaction.

Problems can occur when the sympathetic nervous system is unnecessarily over-activated frequently. If we react too strongly or let the small over-reactions (the daily hassles) pile up, we may run into physical as well as psychological problems. Gastrointestinal problems (examples: diarrhea or nausea), depression, severe headaches, or relapse can come about from acute distress. Insomnia, heart disease, and distress habits (examples: drinking, overeating, smoking, and using drugs) can result from the accumulation of small distresses.

What we all need is to learn to approach matters in more realistic and reasonable ways. Strong reactions are better reserved for serious situations. Manageable reactions are better for the everyday issues that we typically have to face.

REACTOR OR OVER-REACTOR?

Below are situations that cause stress in some people and distress in others. Imagine yourself in each one right now. How are you reacting?

  • Driving your car in rush hour
  • Getting a last minute work assignment
  • Misplacing something in the house
  • Having something break while you're using it
  • Dealing with incompetence at work
  • Planning your budget
  • Being blamed for something
  • Waiting in a long line at the grocery store

“Art Lynch is the kind of leader all SAG-AFTRA  members should be proud to have in the boardroom, and it’s a privilege to serve alongside him. He asks the tough questions, and doesn’t act until he gets the answers. Nevada SAG-AFTRA members who want a smart, dedicated, and proven leader looking out for their interests should give Art their full support.”

Ned Vaughn
SAG 1st Vice President

A major advocate of change, Hollywood and National leader Ned Vaughn knows that there are times when change should wait. For Nevada this is one of those times. Experience is needed now more than ever to guide the Guild and protect the membership.  Union leadership and Nevada's future depend on experience, respect and support to bring the Guild to a new level in today's rapidly evolving industry environment. Support Art Lynch for reelection to the SAG-AFTRA National Board of Directors from Nevada. This is a time where experience and the respect of leadership is needed to protect Nevada while moving the union into the future. Vote to re-elect Art Lynch.

"Art is extremely intelligent and passionate in the work he champions and the individuals he mentors and represents."

Art was the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) elected National Board Member from Nevada and the elected Nevada Branch Council Member during my tenure there as the Nevada Branch's Executive Director and previously while I was a director in SAG's benefits organization (SAG-PPHP).

Art is extremely intelligent and passionate in the work he champions and the individuals he mentors and represents.  As an elected official both on the national stage and locally, Art has demonstrated his communication skills during organizational and public presentations, discussions and debates.

Art has been able to interact effectively with a broad cross section of individuals with varying backgrounds in age and gender, ethnicity and cultural backgrounds, skills and professional levels, socioeconomic classes, political leanings and disabilities.

We have testified together before the Nevada State Senate to persuade the legislature to enact production incentives to bring more quality work to the Nevada arts community.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Sincerely
